First off, I want to say that I am a general contractor/home builder that is doing quite a lot of remodeling and very little new construction at the moment due to the economy. Regardless, I think this TOOL is a good one to have and I use it just about every week, mostly for plunge cuts into baseboard, for cutting off the bottom of trim to accept tile, replacing rotton wood on soffits and fascia, cutting out drywall to accept "new work" electrical boxes, and other "tight" areas. It's a good tool for these uses.
Overall, this type of tool is a must have if you perform a lot of home improvements. Besides the sonicrafter, there is the Dremel multimax and the Fein multimaster. I bought the Rockwell because of the high cost of the Fein and the cost of their blades as probably most of you have. However, the Rockwell blades are still extremely high and you WILL go through MANY blades. My normal blade purchase is around $100.00. I'm hoping that very soon one of the blade MFG will come up with some reasonably priced aftermarket blades, and I'm sure I'm not alone in this regard, which gets me around to the reason of this post.
I agree that the ads show this blade plowing through grout, mortar, etc. But as we all know, ads are quite deceiving. I will stake my reputation as a general contractor that the grout/mortar in these ads were either very green, or improperly mixed and thus a very low PSI.. The first time I used this blade I was attempting to get up some mortar on a bathroom demo job. The blade material is made of copper?? Because after a minute or so of use, and without any results to speak of, it started bending. I was at first amazed, but sometimes you just have to laugh about it. I realized that this blade had little to no Quality control and/or engineering. I am so sick and tired of companies buying up Chinese and India crap. Bottom line, unbelievably horrible engineering on Rockwell's part, and if it's not that then there is absolutly no QC department. One would have to think that as a large company with a marketing and engineering department, they would absolutely be fully aware that this blade is worthless garbage.
In conclusion, while i like the tool (and yes, it does get quite hot, and yes, I would have appreciated a tool that had been engineered with an easier blade configuration other than torquing down with an allen wrench. This blade is perhaps just a notch above totally useless. If you think you can remodel your bathroom with this blade, you will find yourself in error. It's a good tool for what I use it for, tight places. It's a good multi tool, but there are also better tools that will do the job faster. If I have a lot of demo work that involves cutting or grinding, I usually use a sawzall, grinder, pry bar, scraper, and sledge hammer with some old fashioned "elbow grease". Hope this helps.
